Reviews of the real Lady Macbeth
I walked into the intimate performance space at the Actors Company in Hollywood expecting an inventive reimagining of Shakespeare’s Scottish tragedy. Instead, I found myself transported to the mist-soaked Highlands, surrounded by heather, holly, and the old magic of a world where the veil between nature and spirit feels deliciously thin. – Diana Mathur
Fantasy and magic reveal the story of a beautiful queen who writes poetry, who got married to an old ogre that her father wanted her to marry. She cries to spirits in the forest, where behind her we see a delightful image of the light coming through the trees, which illuminates her.
There are so many beautiful images and strong scenes in this production. The scene when she gives birth to her son is so masterfully created, strongly acted and it is a scene I will always remember. – Discover Hollywood Magazine
THE REAL LADY MACBETH in its best moments is all poetry, mysticism, and magic, bringing forth a feminine character who early on is warned to write her own story.
Writers, Coco Blignaut and Edison Park have crafted a piece that is based on historical fact. And they go deeper by creating real, interconnected relationships among their four characters. – Gia on the move
Using a fresh visual look that blends Bohemian and steampunk, with witchy undertones, a quartet of four actors will keep you nailed to your seats with electrifying portrayals that include some iconic Shakespeare monologues woven into the play, to bring you the truth about Lady Macbeth that you never knew. – Broadway World
The intense production will pull into its spell thanks to the astonishingly real characters brought to life by four amazing actors who authentically portray these historical druids on the darkened and often spooky, mist-filled scenic design by Lou H with emotionally-empowering lighting designed by Jared Pixler. Druid costumes, most likely created by Blignaut and Park, add to the realism of the play’s time period. – SHARI BARRETT, Hollywood Fringe
As an audience member, the play felt intimate, and cathartic perhaps for the spirit of Gruoch, and perhaps for the actors as well. The heart and soul of the play was its emotion, its raw, animalistic connection to nature, and the power of the feminine.
Beloved Topanga couple Coco Blignaut and Edison Park have co-written and produced a play—a new twist on Shakespeare’s Macbeth—for the Hollywood Fringe festival. Blignaut and Park’s The Real Lady Macbeth was created to “…remove the curse on Lady Macbeth, on witches…” with the intention of revealing the true innocence of the female characters in the play. – Topanga New Times
Press releases of the real Lady Macbeth
the real LADY MACBETH – lifting the curse – is a play that will lift the curse on the REAL Lady Macbeth, an 11th century Scottish queen, who was nothing like Shakespeare’s evil queen with a masculine lust for power. The true historical queen’s name and her memory have been slandered on stages all over the world for the past 500 years. It is time to set her free! – Noho Art District
