the real Lady Macbeth is a play that looks to remove this centuries-long curse that was placed on her, as it turns out, she was nothing of the sort.

Something strange happened to Coco Blignaut of Rosarium Films. In 2014, she was sitting in her living room, trying to memorize a Shakespearean Lady Macbeth monologue. For some reason she had been trying to present this monologue on stage, and failed. Her voice would become small as she pulled back, her face would flush, she would feel ill, and her teacher would stop her. This was unusual for Coco, as she is quite comfortable with Shakespeare, having worked on many scenes from many of his plays throughout the years. What was going on?

That night, as she was working, she felt a strange presence, and looking up, she saw a very sad woman standing just outside the glass front door. This was clearly Lady Macbeth. Coco got very afraid, feeling that she was losing her mind, she stopped working on the monologue, vowing never to work on Lady Macbeth ever again, if she was to keep her sanity. But Lady Macbeth haunted her mind. So, Coco did what she always does, she went to the library and looked for information on this infamous Shakespeare character. Much to her astoundment, she found that Lady Macbeth was a true historical figure who once lived, the wife of King Macbeth. (Many people in the theater world are surprised when she mentions this. These are not Shakespeare’s original made up characters? No! It turns out).

She found no books on the real Lady Macbeth. In the whole entire library. How odd! Much about King Macbeth, but nothing about his wife, other than her real name and her royal lineage.

Upon further investigation, she found snippets, theories, archeological evidence, old history manuscripts, and such, and slowly it came to light that the real Lady Macbeth was NOTHING like Shakespeare’s character. She was innocent.

Now, how would you feel if your name and memory has been slandered for the past 500 years, calling you an evil woman, when you were nothing of the sort? No wonder there is a curse on this play, and many superstitions that surround it. So much so, that most actors will never name the play by its name. They call it – the Scottish play.

Finally, through the lens of the history of the Celtic culture and traditions, and an intimate conversation with Lady Macbeth’s spirit, a coherent picture of Lady Macbeth immersed. In the process, Coco collaborated with Edison Park, to have the story emerge in its full richness through enhanced character development, creating arcs and fleshing out the world of these legendary people who once lived.

Lady Macbeth lived in pagan Scotland, still ruled by the Druids. Magic ruled. A belief in fairies was very real. Not the kind of fairies we think of in our modern age, small and cute and harmless. Oh no …

The people of that time were immersed in Nature. They had a very mystical understanding of Nature. They were still connected. Nature created a spell in which humans lived and operated.

It was clear to Coco that Lady Macbeth wanted and needed to tell her story, and the stories of the women of Macbeth’s time.

The play is feminine and dreamlike, contrasting the cruel and bloody world of the male warriors of the Medieval times. It is the Voice of the Invisible and Unheard Ones, now finally allowed to speak.

The three women in – the real Lady Macbeth are the counterpart to Shakespeare’s three witches. History has not been kind to witches.

The play has been created to remove the curse on Lady Macbeth, on witches, and by presenting the women in this play in all their innocence. Because that is what they were.
